Harper Same Sex Marriage Controversy

The very first day of the campaign the media’s headlines were about Stephen Harper’s statement on same sex marriage.

Harpers statement about same sex marriage wasn’t the first point in his campaign speech, it was an honest answer to a reporters question.  Why does the media choose to emphasize this, rather the more important issues from his agenda, like ending corruption?

I am not sure why Paul Martin says that same sex marriage is a charter right.  The supreme court exercised its discretion not to answer the following question “Is the opposite sex requirement for marriage for civil purposes, as established by the common law and set out for Quebec in section 5 of the Federal Law–Civil Law Harmonization Act, No. 1, consistent with the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms?  If not, in what particular or particulars and to what extent?

If the justices thought that there was some charter right that was to be trampled on, would they not have ruled so in the interest of protecting it?

For those who think that Harper has a hidden agenda, why is he openly talking about it?  He wants to be democratic, unlike the Liberals, and allow all MP’s INCLUDING cabinet ministers to vote their conscience.

Harper has his own views on this matter, but you can rest assured that he isn’t going to impose them on you, because he won’t impose them on his own MP’s.  Unlike the Liberals, he realizes we live in a democracy.

I look forward to the day when we have a real free vote on the subject.
